56 km away from the University headquarters. The taluka is known for historical places, like Kittur where freedom fighters viz., Rani Chennamma and Sangolli Rayanna lived and devoted their lives to the country for freedom. A major part of the agricultural land is catered by the Malaprabha irrigation project and remaining area is rainfed with an average rainfall of around 650 mm annually. This place is a major cotton ginning center in the North Karnataka. The first cotton ginning and pressing mill was established in 1911. Agriculture is the main occupation of the Taluka. The main crops grown are soyabean, cotton, groundnut, maize, green gram and blackgram during kharif and sorghum, wheat, maize, sugarcane, chickpea during rabi. The government identified this place for research purpose during 1947 and started working on the agricultural crops. Few years ago, University identified the station as a one of the major seed producing farms and now producing quality seeds in all the major crops of this area. The farm includes 29.99 ha of area with 16.82 ha irrigated, 10 ha rainfed, and remaining is under 4 ha under plantation (mango) and 3.17 ha under buildings and roads.

Agroclimatic zone : Zone 8 (North Transition Zone)

Area : 29.99 ha (Only 3.00 ha is under irrigation)

Soil type : Deep black cotton soils

Mandates

Production of Nucleus seeds, breeder seeds and truthful seeds of different crops (Soybean, Groundnut, Greengram, Blackgram, cowpea, Onion, Chickpea, Sorghum, Wheat, Safflower and Sunhemp majorly under rainfed conditions.

Testing the performance of the promising varieties of Soybean, Groundnut, Greengram, Blackgram, Niger, Sesamum, Millets, Safflower, Maize, Bengalgram, Jowar, Wheat and and any other alloted under MLT.

Testing the performance of newer insecticide molecules, advanced varieties and Hybrids.

Conduct of FLD/Farm trials.

Maintenance of animal component for FYM to enrich the soils.

Accomplishments

Improving farm productivity by minimizing perennial weed problem and enhancing the farm receipts from last three years.

Publication (Only Nos.)

(i) International : 1

(ii) National : 30

(iii) Books (Chapter in books) : 4

(iv) Popular articles / Extension bulletins : 5

Awards/Recognitions

Awarded with best research station and high revenue generation award during 2023 University Foundation Day.

Way forward

Good quality and quantity seed production

Establishment of good vermicompost unit

Improvement of existing dairy component to make it more profitable

Any other Important Activities/Infrastructure developed (Seed production/Demonstration/Extension)

Along with major seed production (Mandates), Multilocation trials of almost all crops (of zone 3 and 8) will be conducted at ARS, Bailhongal.

Office contact

Subhash B. The annual average rainfall of the center is 805 mm, The soils of station are black and red characterized with loam to silt loam having 50 to 55 per cent silt and 20-25 per cent clay. Due to concerted effort on bidi tobacco research, Nipani area of Belagavi district is known for production of excellent quality bidi tobacco in the country. The research on bidi tobacco was further strengthened with the start of AICRP on Tobacco during the year 1970-71. Considering the infrastructure facilities and suitable climate, in 1991 the centre was identified as Seed production farm under the University. The center has mainly concentrated research on bidi tobacco along with Multi Location Testing of various crops viz. Soybean, groundnut, bengalgram, sorghum and Wheat to identify the profitable technologies for farming community. The center has well maintained dairy unit, hence it has started certificate course on Dairy Technology during the year 2011-12 and also maintained Sapota plantation.
